A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the rapidity and management of the country's major public works projects.
The accident occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a line developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate what caused this tragedy,” declared the country's president.
The leader confirmed that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The leader stated plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the former leader, whose presidency concluded the year before. This venture was a hallmark of his leadership's economic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another massive train initiative from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The building of both rail lines was managed by the armed forces, marking a significant increase of its duties in national works. They were built at an accelerated pace, beating expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had also fueled persistent concerns over safety standards.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This encompasses an previous accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the tragedy, the chief of a primary political opposition urged an urgent halt in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This stoppage was suggested pending a thorough independent investigation. The party declared that the tragedy "requires swift accountability."
In response, the head of state maintained that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and management of these vital undertakings.
